Give a brief description of the story.

Professor Simon Cross and his assistant, Elizabeth West, are accidentally transported back in time. They land in 1920s Manhattan. As they try to find out how to return home, a local kingpin with a dark secret sets his sights on Elizabeth, and Simon’s and Elizabeth’s day to day struggles become a fight for their very lives.

What did you think the author did particularly well?

Ms. Martin has a wonderfully fluid style and is a great storyteller. She takes us to a different era full of speakeasies and gangsters with such ease that we forget that we’re actually living in the 21st century. Her characters and backdrops are colorful and three-dimensional, and the plot has twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Even supernatural beings make an appearance.

What was your favorite thing about the story?

I loved being taken on a ride along with Simon and Elizabeth as they explore what has happened to them and how they can find their way back. Their budding romance is a part of this novel, even though it is not the focus of the book: solving the mystery is, and that part is done exceedingly well. As for as time travel novels go, this one is a surprisingly realistic portrayal of many of the issues time travelers might face. A charming book.

Fans of time travel stories and 1920’s flapper movies and novels might enjoy this story. If you think you were born in the wrong era and would love to experience what the 1920’s were like, this book is for you.
